The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR).  UIC is the largest university in Chicago with 30,328 students, 12,473 faculty and staff, 15 colleges, and a major academic medical center.

About UIC’s research component:

UIC is one of the nation’s leading research institutions with $355 million in annual research expenditures.  It is one of three Carnegie Research-1 universities in metropolitan Chicago.  Research at UIC is translating bench research to the bedside; creating healthier communities; re-shaping educational policies; pursuing a better understanding of the world through the humanities and social sciences; creating resilient urban infrastructure and systems; advancing computing and data science; developing cleaner, more sustainable energy; and driving economic development by translating research into impactful products. UIC has a $2.26 billion annual operating budget and in addition to the main campus in Chicago, it also operates regional campuses in five locations across the State of Illinois.

Key responsibilities:

• Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the VCR provides important leadership in the areas of research and economic development by encouraging and supporting investigators; facilitating multidisciplinary projects; seeking out new sources of funding; ensuring ethical, informed and safe conduct of research, and serving as the spokesperson for the UIC research enterprise.
• The VCR oversees the following units: Biologic Resources Laboratory; Conflict of Commitment and Interest; Division of Specialized Care for Children; Office of Grants and Contracts; Office for the Protection of Research Subjects; Office of Animal Care and Institutional Biosafety; Office of Research Services; Office of Post- Doctoral Affairs; Research Integrity; Research Resources Center; and Research Centers and Institutes.
• The Vice Chancellor for Research is also the authorized institutional official responsible for assuring academic integrity in research and compliance with federal, state and local regulations pertaining to research.

Expertise:

The successful candidate will have academic and scientific experience in conducting and managing interdisciplinary research programs; experience securing external funding; have sufficient background and achievements to qualify for appointment as a tenured professor; and possess the leadership qualities and abilities to leverage UIC’s goal of being the nation’s premier urban public research university.

Being part of the senior administration, the candidate will be a good team-player contributing to the strategic direction and leadership necessary to fortify the institutional triumph of this diverse campus. The candidate will possess strong management and communication skills, fiscal acumen, a vision for the future of research, interpersonal skills and experience in fostering research partnerships between universities and federal/state agencies, and industry.
